In medical practice, every detail can be the key to a vital diagnosis. The images published by Dr. Harinder Sandhu show a traditional yet highly significant diagnostic technique known as infant head transillumination.
When a powerful light source is placed near an infant’s skull in the first months of life, the tissues and fluids present can scatter the light in such a way that the entire head lights up with a reddish color, as seen in the photo. This method serves as a preliminary check to identify the potential presence of excessive fluid accumulation or lesions within the skull, as also evidenced by head circumference measurements and advanced scan images (MRI/CT).
Although the visuals may look surreal or unsettling at first glance, they are essential tools that help doctors early identify neurological conditions and provide infants with the proper treatment on time.
