A black widow spider bite requires prompt action. While black widow venom is a potent neurotoxin that causes painful muscle contractions, bites are rarely fatal if managed properly.
Step-by-Step Emergency Actions
Seek Immediate Medical Attention
Go to an urgent care clinic or emergency room immediately, or call emergency services.
If you are in the U.S., you can call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 while en route.
Clean the Bite Area
Wash the area thoroughly with mild soap and clean water to prevent infection.
Apply a Cold Compress
Apply an ice pack or damp cloth wrapped in a towel for 10–15 minutes at a time. This slows venom spread and reduces pain and swelling.
Elevate the Affected Area
If the bite occurred on an arm or leg, keep it raised above heart level if possible.
Remain Calm and Rest
Keep movement to a minimum to keep your heart rate down and slow the spread of venom through your system.
Identify the Spider (Only if Safe)
Take a picture or safely bring the spider in a secure container. Do not try to catch it if doing so risks another bite.
What NOT to Do
DO NOT attempt to cut open the wound or suck out the venom.
DO NOT apply a tourniquet or tight bandage, as this can cause tissue damage.
DO NOT apply heat to the bite site.
