.
The morning began with nothing more adventurous in mind than giving my dog some exercise.
The beach was nearly empty.
Low tide had exposed a broad stretch of damp sand, and the first light of the day turned the shallow water silver.
Apart from the steady rhythm of the waves and the occasional cry of a distant seabird, everything felt still.
My dog trotted several yards ahead of me, investigating driftwood, clumps of seaweed, and every scent the retreating water had left behind. Then I noticed something lying near the waterline.
At first, it looked like a torn plastic bag tangled in wet seaweed.
It was pale, partly translucent, and spread unevenly across the sand.
Each small wave reached it, moved part of it slightly, and then slipped back toward the ocean.
