The revealing moment came during an episode of IMO, the podcast Michelle Obama co-hosts with her brother, Craig Robinson.
Filmmaker Steven Spielberg joined the conversation to talk about family, Hollywood, and raising children in the spotlight. During the episode, Spielberg revealed that he had recently invited Barack Obama to visit the set of his upcoming sci-fi movie.
It was the former president’s first time ever stepping onto a movie set. But one detail made the story even more interesting.
Malia Obama, the couple’s eldest daughter, has been quietly building her own career as a filmmaker. And according to her mom, she has never invited her famous parents to see her work.
“Even though your daughter is a filmmaker, Malia. So, I feel bad I scooped Malia,” Spielberg joked, according to Instagram.
Michelle’s response was both funny and incredibly relatable.
“She doesn’t care. She will never invite us to anything that she does. You know, she doesn’t want us around her stuff,” she admitted.
Now 28, Malia has already made a name for herself in Hollywood. She wrote on Donald Glover’s Swarm and directed the 2023 short film The Heart.
She’s also chosen to work professionally as Malia Ann, leaving the famous Obama surname behind as she forges her own path.
For Michelle and Barack, it seems their daughter simply wants to do things her own way — and as many parents can probably relate to, sometimes that means staying on the sidelines and letting your child have their own space. 👏🏼
