“If there are truly angels on Earth, we just lost one.”

.

With those heartbreaking words, Sally Field paid tribute to Dolly Parton at Monday night’s Emmy Awards, leaving the audience with a poignant reminder of just how much the legendary star meant to the people who knew her.
Parton died on August 25 at the age of 80, following a private battle with cancer, and the Emmys set aside a special moment to celebrate her extraordinary life and legacy. Field knew Parton in a way that went far beyond simply sharing a screen.
The two starred together in the beloved 1989 film Steel Magnolias, and Field spoke about the woman behind the enormous fame — describing Parton as genuine, humble and supportive, while also remembering her famously wicked sense of humour. Field’s words painted a picture of someone whose warmth remained just as memorable as her music, acting and unmistakable personality.
And then came the music.
Reba McEntire, Parton’s longtime friend, took the stage and performed “Appalachian Memories,” the 1983 song by Parton. It was an especially emotional choice, with McEntire later telling her late friend: “I love you, Dolly. So much.” The performance gave the tribute a feeling of intimacy rather than spectacle — two women who had known and loved Parton helping an audience say goodbye to someone who had touched generations.
Parton’s legacy, of course, stretches far beyond country music. She became an acclaimed actress, television producer, philanthropist and one of the most recognisable figures in American popular culture. Her generosity was a central part of the tribute, with Field highlighting the profound impact Parton had on others, particularly through her humanitarian work and the help she provided in her native Tennessee.
For a woman who spent a lifetime making millions of people smile, the Emmys offered something very different: a moment to simply miss her. And as Field’s words echoed through the room, it was perhaps the simplest description that felt the most fitting — an angel on Earth, who will never be replaced
