My widowed father remarried a woman 36 years younger than him—at his funeral, she finally got what she deserved.

My name is Diane, and I was 34 when my father remarried, eight months after my mother’s funeral, to a woman younger than me.

Vanessa was 36 years younger than he was.

She had a personal trainer, a designer wardrobe, and a way of calling my father “my dear husband” in front of guests that made my skin crawl every single time.

I tried to give her a chance.

My brother didn’t even try.

Whenever she wasn’t in the room, he called her exactly what he believed she was.

For six years, we watched her completely redecorate our childhood home.

We watched her convince our father to sell the lake house he’d built with his own hands.

We watched her sit beside his hospital bed wearing designer sunglasses and scrolling through her phone while I held his other hand and my brother paced the hallway outside.

He passed away quietly on a Tuesday morning, before either of us could get there in time.

Vanessa arranged the funeral herself, “exactly the way he would have wanted it,” she told the family, even though none of us recognized a single one of her choices—not the flowers, not the music, not even the photograph she’d selected.

She wore a black Chanel outfit and sat in the front row, dabbing her eyes with a handkerchief that never seemed to actually get wet.

My brother and I sat two rows behind her.

Family friends kept looking at us, then at her, then back at us.

Halfway through the service, the funeral director walked down the aisle and leaned over to whisper something into Vanessa’s ear.
