Dementia is a condition that affects millions worldwide, often leading to memory loss and cognitive decline.
However, the inspiring story of 82-year-old Sylvia Hatzer offers hope. By embracing a Mediterranean diet and engaging in mental exercises, Sylvia experienced a remarkable reversal of her dementia symptoms.
Sylviaโs memory began to wane in 2015, leading to a diagnosis of Alzheimerโs disease in December 2016. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, culminating in a heartbreaking moment when she no longer recognized her son, Mark. Determined to help his mother, Mark sought alternatives to traditional medication.
Mark discovered that Mediterranean countries have lower rates of Alzheimerโs, which he attributed to their diets. He introduced Sylvia to a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and cereals, with moderate consumption of oily fish and dairy, and low in meat, sugar, and saturated fat. Foods like blueberries, strawberries, Brazil nuts, and walnuts became staples in her meals.
