Jack used to be sweet. When he and Lora first dined at my restaurant, they split bills and shared laughs. But recently, things changed. Jack became flashyโordering steaks, wine, and fancy appetizersโthen pushing the check toward Lora, who barely ate and always paid.
On Loraโs birthday, Jack outdid himself. He showed up with eight friends, declared, โItโs on me!โโand then waited for Lora to arrive, exhausted and clearly upset. As usual, he shoved the $827 bill at her.She excused herself and disappeared into the restroom. I followedโand overheard her sobbing to her mom, โI canโt keep paying for everything. Jack expects it all.โ I had enough.
I told Lora to trust me. When I returned to the table, I โinformedโ Jack that weโd double-booked the table and VIPs were on their way. Right on cue, Lora stood up and said she had a sudden meetingโthen left. Jack was stunned. His friends bailed. One by one, they made excuses and ditched him. Alone, Jack sputtered, โBut Lora always pays!โ
โNot tonight,โ I said, handing him the bill. Red-faced, he paid. The next day, Lora came backโfree, glowing, and grateful. โIโm using that money for a spa day,โ she said with a smile. Jack lost his free ride. Lora reclaimed her dignity. And I served karmaโon a silver platter.
