When Barron Trump was just a little boy, his mother noticed something about him that she simply couldn’t ignore.
It wasn’t just his appearance or the way he carried himself. According to Melania, there was something about his personality that reminded her unmistakably of his father.
In fact, she had a special nickname for him – and once she explained why, it became clear just how much she saw of Donald in their son.
She called him “little Donald.”
Melania opened up about Barron’s personality in an interview with Parenting magazine, explaining that he was already showing some very familiar traits.
“He is a very strong-minded, very special, smart boy. He is independent and opinionated and knows exactly what he wants,” she said.
And it wasn’t just a nickname she used for fun. Melania explained that Barron was a mixture of both parents in appearance, but it was his personality that reminded her so much of Donald.
Even when he was just seven years old, there were other little signs of his individuality.
In a 2016 interview with DuJour, Melania revealed that Barron preferred wearing a suit and tie rather than casual sweatpants – a rather unusual choice for a young boy.
At home, he also had plenty of room to be himself. The family had dedicated an entire floor of their Trump Tower residence to Barron, where he could keep his toys, invite friends over and play.
But Melania also made sure that her son had plenty of time with his father.
In an earlier interview, she described how Donald and Barron shared a special bond, often spending time together in the mornings and evenings. They would talk, play and enjoy time together away from the spotlight.
Looking back, Melania’s description of her son offers a glimpse into a side of the Trump family that the public rarely gets to see – a mother watching her little boy grow up and recognizing more and more of his father in him.
And perhaps that is why the nickname “Little Donald” stuck
