The spooky yet stunning sight you saw in the Florida sky is an atmospheric event known as a “Space Jellyfish” (or the Twilight Phenomenon).
This phenomenon occurs during early morning or evening rocket launches (typically SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets) and is explained by a few key factors:
High-Altitude Sunlight: Even though it is dark on the ground, high up in the upper atmosphere, sunlight reaches around the curve of the Earth and illuminates the rocket’s exhaust trail.
Expanding Gas Plume: In the thin upper atmosphere, the gas and frozen water particles released by the rocket expand rapidly, forming a large, cloud-like umbrella or jellyfish shape.
Stage Separation: The distinct glowing clouds and trails are formed when the rocket’s first-stage booster separates and fires its thrusters while the upper stage engine continues into orbit.
