โGrandpa, whatโs that orange thing with the gray skin? Is it a new kind of fruit?โ they asked.
I laughed and said,
โNo, my little ones, this is a winter squash! A gift from nature that weโve had in our garden for generations.โ
โWhy do they call it winter squash?โ one of them asked.
โBecause it lasts a long time โ all the way through winter. When other vegetables are gone, this one stays full of vitamins and flavor.โ
They leaned closer to touch it.
โWhy is it so orange inside?โ
โThatโs because itโs full of beta-carotene, which your body turns into vitamin A. Itโs great for your eyes, your skin, and your immune system. And when you cook it, it becomes soft and naturally sweet.โ
โCan we make soup with it, Grandpa?โ
โOf course! You can make soup, pie, or even dessert. Squash is like a little treasure chest of health.โ
They giggled and said,
โSo itโs not just an orange thing โ itโs a super veggie!โ
And I thought to myself,
โThe beauty of life is when simple things become lessons for the next generation.โ ๐ป
