To discipline her disrespectful 13-year-old son, one mother found a humorous yet powerful way to drive home the lesson that “nothing comes for free.” This creative approach to parenting, which highlighted real-world responsibilities, has resonated with many parents online.
In 2015, Heidi Johnson struggled with her defiant son, Aaron, who she described as wanting “the perks of growing up without the responsibilities.” Aaron, who had started earning a small income as a YouTuber, resisted his mother’s authority and refused to complete his homework. In a dramatic outburst, the teenager stormed out of her room, declaring he was “a free person” since he was “making money.”
Faced with this challenge, Heidi decided to respond with tough love. She penned a pointed letter to Aaron, which she later shared on Facebook.Nearly a decade later, the post has resurfaced, gaining renewed attention.
“Since you seem to have forgotten you are only 13, and I’m the parent, and that you won’t be controlled, I guess you will need a lesson in independence,” the letter begins. Heidi framed it as a “roommate contract,” listing expenses Aaron would now be responsible for, such as rent, utilities, and internet access. She also suggested he would need to cook his meals and keep up with household chores.
