1. Seal Entry Points
Rodents can squeeze through even the smallest gaps. Inspect your home for cracks, holes, and gaps around doors, windows, pipes, and vents. Use steel wool, caulking, or metal mesh to seal these openings.
2. Keep Food Sealed
Mice and rats are drawn to food sources. Store food in airtight containers, and avoid leaving pet food or snacks out overnight. Regularly clean up crumbs and spills to eliminate temptations.
3. Declutter Your Home
Clutter provides rodents with hiding spots. Keep storage areas tidy and avoid piling up items like cardboard boxes or newspapers. Decluttering also makes it easier to spot any signs of infestation.
4. Trim Vegetation
Rodents often use overgrown vegetation as a pathway into your home. Trim bushes, trees, and shrubs away from the exterior walls of your house. Keep firewood stored at least 20 feet away from the building.
5. Dispose of Garbage Properly
Make sure garbage bins have tight-fitting lids. Take out the trash regularly, and avoid leaving garbage bags near entry points. Compost bins should also be rodent-proof.
